Community driven wetland conservation can help augment state efforts not only in wetland restoration but also in skill development and employment generation through conservation activities. Opportunities like eco-tourism, bird watching, safaris, journalism, nature photography, and even scientific research can be leveraged from wetland conservation. Other revenue generation activities include sustainable lotus farming and market access for wetland products, community driven sustainable fisheries.

The JalKosh Initiative also works to empower the local community with training in waste management. Waste management will be taught in a way that the local community can generate employment through recycling, selling “upcycled” products and waste to energy solutions will be provided to also address energy poverty. This would help with achieving sustainable development goals as better management of waste to protect the wetlands as well as generate employment and skill development. Such waste to wealth solutions will also serve as incentives to change irresponsible behaviour of waste disposal and protect the wetlands.

The JalKosh Initiative is empowering the community with solutions of that reduce negative impact on wetlands like improved anti-malarial solutions like mosquito nets, organic repellents and growing natural repellent plants like marigold, citronella etc. to prevent people from spilling kerosene or diesel into wetlands, commonly done to prevent mosquitoes from breeding.
